I do agree that employers should loosen their views on dress and appearance.įor centuries, especially in the United States, black women were forced to shave their heads and cover their hair. It shouldn’t be ripping Justin Bieber because he decided to wear dreadlocks. If the problem is that corporate America has too strict regulations for Black ppl, than arguing that alone would be the right approach. Especially since the allegations are based solely on skin color. Taking out your frustration and ripping on celebrities and other people who are in an occupation that gives them the liberty to do whatever style they want (all of which are achievable positions for black ppl) isn’t right. If there are public schools or jobs that make it practically impossible for black students to follow a dress code, then I agree that should be handled. It can interfere with work/school (like wearIng essential headgear) or distracting (if I’m sitting behind you in class and can’t see the board, that’s an issue). I can’t show up to a job interview with death metal hair and expect to be taken seriously. The black man with a clean haircut will be taken more seriously than one growing his hair out. Race, Religion, LGBTQ, Meta, Politics, Parenting/Family issues.Īll of the nonblack people wearing those hairstyles would face the same consequences if they worked a job or went to a school that didn’t allow cornrows and stuff like that.
